New Research!
There is new research being done that was featured on Grey's Anatomy that I would like to talk to you about. This research is for Hypothalamic Hamartoma (HH). First, I will explain what HH is. It is a rare, benign tumor in the hypothalamus, a part of the brain. While the tumor may not be cancerous, its effects certainly aren't benign. These tumors are hard to reach surgically, therefore posing a problem for treatment. HH can cause gelastic or dacrystic (seizures that are focal (occur in one certain area of the brain) and cause uncontrollable bouts of laughing or crying, respectively) seizures, sometimes other seizure types such as absence, atonic, tonic, or tonic-clonic seizures, as well as changes in thinking, memory, or attention, sudden episodes of rage, other changes in mood or behavior, early puberty, and a genetic syndrome associated with it is Pallister-Hall Syndrome.
